#SproutChat Recap: Tips for Cultivating Your Personal Brand

SproutChat-with-ThinkWarwick-insightsPersonal branding represents a vital part of any career. Social media, as well as the ease of creating digital content, provides a means to build up your online identity in no time. All of this can lead to more valuable connections, exciting opportunities and the potential for greater success—making your energy well worth the investment.

Jacob Warwick, a personal branding expert and thought leader, joined the #SproutChat community this week to share some advice on how to establish and strengthen an online presence that can benefit your career. Below are a few key takeaways from that discussion.

Focus Your Efforts to Become More Memorable

You can’t be known for everything. So first, think of all your areas of expertise, then hone in on one or two subject areas that will help eliminate confusion and make your name synonymous with a focused topic.

For example, no one is going to remember, “Tony, the expert in paid advertising, growing an email list, Twitter chats and brand loyalty.” Instead, most people will likely be able to recall, “Tony, the guy who can recommend the best Twitter chats and knows how to grow a community around your company’s chat.”

Emphasizing a particular area of expertise tends to lead to more followers and will you help you further develop your skills and talents. From there, you can target certain social conversations and chime in to provide value.

Align Your Brand Across Networks for More Opportunities

It may take some patience, but strong personal branding will eventually lead to greater opportunities. Once you have decided what you want to be known for—and what you wish to pursue as a result—be sure to clearly convey your objectives to your followers. That means including direct and consistent calls to action in your social pages and profiles, which will help further establish your credibility.

Take Advantage of Tools to Cultivate a Strong Identity

We’re all busy professionals trying to maintain many social profiles across multiple networks. That can be challenging to say the least. Thankfully, there are several tools and hacks available to make your work more manageable. This will help you strike the right balance between being effective in your job and building a personal brand that will sustain you throughout your career.

Consider How Personal Branding Benefits Your Organization

As you and your colleagues grow your personal networks, think about how your connections can be leveraged for the good of your entire organization through employee advocacy. Encourage your team members to become more active and engaged across multiple channels, as you work together to establish yourselves as trusted experts in your field.
