Facebook removes hundreds of pages and groups in Indonesia

TwitterFacebook

Following the takedown of hundreds of pages and groups linked to Iran on Thursday, Facebook has continued its cull in Indonesia.

The social media giant has been targeting "coordinated inauthentic behavior" on the platform, announcing on Thursday the removal of accounts, pages, and groups linked to the Saracen Group.

Described as a "fake news syndicate," the Saracen Group has been under the spotlight for its smear campaigns against Indonesian politicians and other people.

According to The Straits Times, the syndicate reportedly charged $5,600 for a customised fake news article, which would then be disseminated to its hundreds of thousands of followers. Read more...

Don Jr. thinks 'S&L' is short for 'Saturday Night Live'

TwitterFacebook

Donald Trump Jr., who is the universally acknowledged king of comedy, referred to Saturday Night Live as "S&L" in a tweet Thursday morning.

Don was trying — bless his heart — to make a quip about the 2020 race. "It's almost like a funny version of an S&L skit," he replied to a (wrong) tweet about the "dem platform."

Who doesn't love to watch sketches ("skits") about Savings and Loans? This must be how Don cultivated his strong and good sense of humor. Read more...

Selling fake followers and likes can land you in trouble with the law

TwitterFacebook

Fake followers, fake likes: they've flooded social media in the past few years.

While companies have taken action against fraud accounts, in New York, selling bots and fraudulent social media activity now could land you in hot water. In fact, it's against the law.

New York Attorney General Letitia James announced on Wednesday it had settled with U.S. company Devumi, which had been under investigation following a New York Times exposé which revealed its shady social media practices.

The fake followers, likes, & views that Devumi sold came from bot & sock-puppet accounts.

Devumi also supplied fake accounts that copied real people's social media profiles, and sold endorsements from influencers without disclosing that the influencers had been paid.

See how people are coping with the scary chill of the polar vortex

TwitterFacebook

Parts of the Midwest are experiencing the coldest temperatures in 20 years this week as the polar vortex takes hold.

On Wednesday morning, it was -22 degrees in Chicago, with a wind chill of -49, according to CNN. In northern Minnesota, wind chills dropped to -65. Flights are being delayed and cancelled. The USPS has partially halted service. In some places, it's possible to get frostbite after only a few minutes of skin exposure.

On Twitter, people are sharing the polar vortex's wild effects in their own hometowns. There's indoor ice, boiling water vaporizing into the air, innovative winter-wear layering techniques, and (crucially) bundled-up dogs. In Chicago, commuter rail tracks were set on fire to keep them operational in the frigid temperatures. Things are getting weird out there. Read more...

Here's what's up with Ashton Kutcher tweeting out his phone number

TwitterFacebook

On Monday, Ashton Kutcher tweeted that he'd be "changing [his] social media strategy." On Tuesday, he tweeted out his phone number.

No, Kutcher probably wasn't hacked. And if he did actually give out his private phone number, he probably has a new one now.

I miss having a real connection w/ real people. My Community. From now on you can just text me. I won't be able to respond to everyone but at least we can be real w/ each other & I can share the unedited latest
